Main Vaapas Aunga, which released on 12 June, is slowly gaining traction and popularity. The footfalls have increased as people have started going to the theatres to experience Imtiaz's magic, and after a long wait, I went to the cinema to experience it myself. By the end of the movie, I was still stuck to my seat, recalling all the beautiful emotions I experienced from the film. Imtiaz has added another beautiful masterpiece to his list.
When I mentioned beautiful, you may get the misconception that it is simply a love story, which it apparently is, but it is a love story embedded in a time when the country was flooded with the blood spilled by communal riots, a time when the nation was fueled by hatred, a time when people were not just living through hard times but fighting to stay alive. Yet, this movie is not merely about survival but a tale of love that transcends all places, partitions, and problems. It is a humble reminder that despite all the chaos in the world, love is the only thing keeping us afloat.
I want to talk about a few things in this film.
Writing & Direction
I have been a big fan of Imtiaz, and his work is pure art. Films like Jab We Met, Highway, Rockstar, and Tamasha are a testament to it, and Main Vaapas Aunga is nothing short of a gem. The greatest feat of this movie is that Imtiaz has taken such a serious subject, that is, Partition, dissected it from various aspects, and wrapped it in a sensitive love story. To me, that is peak storytelling, and I will always be a fan of his stories.
Apart from the writing, it is a visually stunning film that is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. I especially liked the nonlinear storytelling, and the transitions were exceptionally good. He slowly drifts us in and out of the past so effortlessly.
Cast
This film has one of the best casts. Every single actor owned their character. Vedang Raina, Diljit Dosanjh, and Sharvari did a phenomenal job, but Naseeruddin Shah was the show stealer. Every second Naseeruddin was on the screen, I felt like my own grandfather was on his deathbed, and such masterful acting is only evident in a film with so much soul. Not only Naseeruddin, but every artist was so convincing that they collectively created a deeply cathartic experience.
Music
The music is exceptionally good in this film, and I can confidently say that, in A. R. Rahman, we trust. A film like this deserves not just beautiful music but soulful music, and who is better than Rahman to deliver it? The film is beautiful, and the music amplifies its beauty exponentially. Kya Kamaal Hai and Tere Paas Main are going to live rent free in my head for at least a few days.
Why you should watch it?
I will give you one reason, the aftertaste. I simply love the aftertaste of Main Vaapas Aunga. Only a few films are capable of leaving behind such a feeling, and this is one of them. Long after the credits rolled, I found myself reliving its moments, replaying its music, and reflecting on its emotions. That lingering feeling is the mark of truly great cinema.
So, what are you waiting for? If you have not watched it already, catch it on the big screen before you regret it, and if you have, please do leave a comment.
See you guys.
